Popular opinion is that soft drinks are by definition unhealthy. But could this, in fact, be a popular misconception?
In the USA, we have many flavored carbonated drinks which we call soda pop. This carbonation process puts the “fizz” in soda pop.

In most soft drinks, carbonation is used to give these drinks their distinctive taste. Diluted carbonic acid causes that fizzy taste, not the bubbles.
Carbonated water, also known as sparkling water, is plain water into which CO2 gas has been dissolved, and is the primary ingredient of most “soft drinks” or “soda pop”.
In the past, these drinks were made at home by combining water in a seltzer bottle with CO2. Club soda, often identical to plain carbonated water, may sometimes contain a small amount of salt or trace minerals. Such trace ingredients may cause a somewhat salty taste in home-made soda pop. Now add some drops of concentrated flavors and you have good old soda pop.
