Could Healthy Eating Damage Your Teeth?
The most common disease these days in the world is tooth decay or cavity formation and this is all due to the fast paced lifestyle and our negligence towards our tooth. We brush our teeth once or twice a day and are satisfied that they will remain intact. But this is not the case and the tooth decay or cavity formation is on the rise manifold. People thought that they were eating for health but instead it was destroying a major part of their bodies.
When one of the victims of the teeth cavity Suzanne Walters suddenly finds that she has developed cavities, she blamed it to the antacids that she often took when she wanted to. She never imagined that this habit of her would lead to such a grave situation of cavity formation.
She went to her dentist Dr. Vincent Chiara who had seen many such cases with the very similar problem of the tooth cavity formation. As the doctor has been seeing a lot of patients with the similar issue, the immediate conclusion was drawn that her antacids did the damage.
Her patients or others were the prey of deadly sugar and they were using sugar knowingly or unknowingly to a larger extent. They might have liked the taste of the sugar-based eatables but it was making a direct impact on their teeth.
People consume a lot of sugar everyday- be it with tea or coffee, form of candies, lozenges, etc.
Sugar is often called as dextrose, glycol, glycerol, sucrose or corn syrup just to take it away from the mind of a common man that the product they are consuming is in fact sugar and that is quite harmful for them.
Dr. Gary Grahos carried out research at the UIC’s College of Dentistry and concluded that the oral bacteria present in our mouth converts sugar into an acid and that harms the out coating of our tooth that is called enamel.
Every candy or lozenge or mint toffee is kept at the most vulnerable and the weakest part of the cavity that acts as a shield for our tooth and avoids the formation of cavities.
There is a solution to cease or delimit the process of cavity formation in our teeth if only we take a very good care of them. It is necessary to brush teeth twice a day and also to rinse them after you eat something. It hardly takes a few seconds but gives a longer life to your teeth protecting them from the cavities.
The other precautionary measure is to lessen the intake of soda or the sweetened carbonated water that damages fluorides and hence our tooth enamel. We must also try the intake of potable and fluorides rich water which comes through the taps only. Though we use more bottled water these days, it is not on par with the regular tap water.
