Snoring is usually a bigger problem for the people who have to sleep with forty five percent of the population who snore. In severe cases, it is important to keep an eye on sleep patterns because of potential life threatening problems. Sleep apnea is a serious problem and can be potentially fatal if it is left untreated.  Don’t despair, you can find relief from snoring.

Treatments

Individuals who suffer from snoring have many different treatments available to them.  Snoring is caused by different things such as blocked nasal passages, deviated septum, the base of the tongue falling back into the throat, or enlarged tonsils or uvula. The reason snoring is so loud is because of vibration in the palate and throat tissues.

Certain lifestyle changes can help many people with their snoring problems. Smoking and alcohol are known to cause snoring.  One way to reduce it is by not overeating just before bedtime, not eating dairy products within a few hours of going to bed, exercising more often, and reducing the intake of caffeine.

One easy way to stop snoring is to sleep on your side and also to sleep with your mouth closed.  There are different devices that can help train people to do both of these things.  There are chin straps and mouth sealants that can be used to hold a person’s mouth shut while they sleep until that becomes a natural habit.  There are pillows and mattresses that are designed to help a person to sleep comfortably on his side but uncomfortably on his back, thus training him to sleep in positions that are not as conducive to snoring.  There are also other ways to treat snoring.

Medications such as throat sprays are used to lubricate the throat. Devices that help hold nasal passages open are used to allow unobstruced breathing at night.

There are several different reasons for snoring and just as many options to help a person stop snoring.  It’s well worth the effort to try.
